Ganesh asked me, “Sister! What is this?”, showing towards his book. To my astonishment, it was the word ‘play’. I was amazed because a two-class student wasn’t able to recognise the word “play”. At that moment, I thought I would teach them everything I know and everything they need to know because there are a lot of Ganesh like him.
Ganesh is one of my students whom I have been teaching in the Centre for Disabled Children Association Nepal as their tuition teacher for one month. It is a non-profit NGO trying its best to give a better future to disabled poor children. As they cannot afford to send every child to private school, they facilitate going to the government school. In Nepal, education and care for children in government schools are less than in private school. So, they were looking for volunteers from all over Nepal to teach them and guide them in their studies. Growing up as a child, I have always looked for ways to give back to my community and have a passion for teaching, so, without any second thought, I committed myself to that program. I always believed there is nothing more rewarding than giving back and making a difference in people’s lives in this great community.
It has been more than three weeks with those children, and I have taught them and learned so many life lessons from them. It is the life-changing part of my life, and I am satisfied because I am doing something for others and trying to impact their lives. They inspire me to be a better person every day. My passion for awarding people and teaching them intensified hugely. I have learned the better way to express the knowledge to people around me.
It makes me happy when I teach them something new every day, and they nod their head symbolising they have understood the topic. I try my best to give them the quality education I was deprived of as I had also studied in the government school. Nowadays, every morning I wake up feeling grateful for the opportunity to do something for those young disabled poor children. I realised volunteering is a great way to make an impact in someone’s life. Giving back make me happier by giving me a sense of purpose and motivates me to meet the best version of myself.
I believe this is the best thing that ever happened to me. Volunteering programs helped me articulate my thoughts, seek purpose in my everyday life, and taught me to be a better person. I learned to be perseverant, patient, and optimistic. Spending time with those children made me happier. Getting an opportunity to teach them gave me a feeling of satisfaction.
